June 14th, Guest Audrey Bell-Kearney; From Passion To Profit:  How To Get There In The Shortest Time

Audrey Bell-Kearney is the founder and CEO of Ms. Boss International.  The company helps individuals learn how to turn their passion and hobbies into businesses.  Although the company helps anyone, there is a special focus on women.

Audrey is passionate about entrepreneurship.  Audrey started her first real business in 1999.  She realized that she was a single mom who wanted to create a nice life for her daughter who was 8 years old at the time.  So she had this idea for a plus size fashion doll which was more realistic than the Barbie Doll.  She told a friend about the idea and the friend thought it was a great idea.  The two became partners and Big Beautiful Dolls, LLC was born June 1999.  Starting this company taught Audrey a lot about running a business, manufacturing overseas and financing a business.  The company became stagnant about six years after they started, so Audrey went on to start her own newspaper titled Women In Business Today.  The newspaper was a monthly publication which provided business tips for those looking to start a business.  The paper also profiled women who were already in business.

The paper opened many doors for Audrey.  She was asked to be interviewed on a local radio station.  The host liked her so much that he brought on full time with her own show which had the same title as her newspaper, Women In Business Today.  The show aired live every Saturday morning at 7:30am.  Audrey did the show for one year until her husband transferred his job to North Carolina.  While in North Carolina Audrey decided that she would start her own TV show.  So she walked into a local TV station in Rocky Mount, NC and pitched the idea to the station manager.  The manager pitched it to the station owner who loved it and the Women In Business Today TV show was born.  Audrey did the show for two years before her husband was transferred back to NJ.  While she was in NC she wrote two books.  The Sister Inc. Blueprint For Starting And Running A Successful Business.  She wanted to be able to expand her reach and the book allowed her to do that.  She also wrote The ABC’s Of Self-Publishing after being asked countless times by others how to write a book.  Having to move back to NJ and start over again, Audrey became a consultant for Rutgers University SBDC and then later a consultant for Kean University SBDC.  After both of those assignments ended she went on to start Sister Inc. Magazine.  In 2008 Audrey produced a short documentary film about her journey as an entrepreneur titled RISE:  An Entrepreneurs Journey To The Top.  The film is being re-edited to be re-released in the fall of 2010.

When Audrey started Ms. Boss International which is located in East Orange, she decided that she wanted the business to encompass all aspects of who she was.  So MBI is a training & development center and a media and publishing company.  Through the Ms. Boss Academy, Audrey partnered with a non-profit in Jersey City to assist women on welfare and the ones coming home from prison on how to start their own business.  Audrey is also completing The Ms. Boss Business Builder Blueprint which is a home-study course which helps business owners who are struggling learn how to use the Internet to market their business.  Because of her love of the Internet and technology Audrey is producing a daily women business web TV show titled The Ms. Boss report which will be streamed across the Internet.   Audrey is also working on her latest book Get Connected which is a resource guide for small business owners who are not set up with broadband or on the web.

Doing Business Without Boarders

About 5 years ago Audrey assisted a gentleman with writing a book about the political system in Liberia, Africa.  That gentleman went on run for president of the country, but he was defeated by President Ellen Johnson.  This gentleman owns land in Liberia.  Because he understands Audrey’s passion for empowering women, he is giving her an acre of land to build the first Ms. Boss Business Center in Liberia. The center will be opened to women to help them learn how to start their own business and to also help women in the US and Liberia learn how to do business with each other. Audrey will be going to Liberia in September to survey the land and to get an estimate of what it will  cost to complete this project.  Just like when Audrey started the doll company she will use her creativity to fund the project.

Every organization has major areas for improvement.  In most cases, it is the business practices and attendant processes.  It is also apparent that technology is not being appropriately used.  Software is inadequate and workarounds have been formulated.  Necessary software to work with the business process is not in place or is not the correct solution to the problem or need – but has been force-fit.
